I’ve read in several different places about there being an absolute divide in our nations news reporting. Fox News has been accused of being firmly Republican and therefore taking a firm right stance to all major news reports. CNN news has been accused of taking the Democratic leftist view of the news by almost everyone in Washington (and my parents). I was listening to an audio clip of comedian David Cross last night and he made a very good point when he said

How fucked up is it that when I want to read what’s actually going on in my country that I have to go and read it on other country’s news websites?

I think David nailed it right there. I’m going to start comparing the top story on CNN with Fox news and the probably The Guardian over in the United Kindom to see what’s actually going on in our nation.
So let’s test this theory and see what happens, shall we? First up let’s go with a screen shot of the front page of Fox News today. Fox News headline story today
Ok, so we have more violence in Iraq today. The top story proclaims that “Violence Escalates in Iraq”. And the image shows some Iraqi men carrying the casket of a fallen leader that was killed in a recent car bombing. Sounds simple enough. But if you pay close attention to the next two news headlines you’ll notice that there is no sense of anything really horrible going on in Iraq right now acording to Fox News. They make it seem like it’s just another day at the office. They say that violence is escalating in Iraq. I think that’s a bit short of the truth. I think violence is and has been at all time highs in Iraq right now.
Now, we push on to CNN news. CNN New headline today
CNN has a much more violent headline of “Attacks kill 13 Iraqis” with a picture of an Iraqi soldier looking distraught while standing in front of the exploded car. Now, at first, you may think that this is a very far-to-the-left view of what’s happening in Iraq right now. But I think CNN has really hit the nail on the head here and is reporting the true horrors of what war brings us. They use words in their headlines like “Attacks” and “kills” because that’s what is really happening over there. People are dying. The war is not over. The situation that we as a country are finding ourselves in right now is horrible. And it makes us the monster!
Last but not least we have The Gaurdian.
The Gaurdian world news headlines It seems as though the Gaurdian also has a very leftist view of American events. From all this it is my opinion that Fox News leans far to the right while other news outlets seem to run closer to the middle if not a bit to the left. But hey, it’s just my opinion, right?
