Bridget Jones’ Diary: The Edge of Reason

An aptly named movie, indeed. They should’ve named it Off the Edge of Reason. This movie was horrible. It was a regurgitation of the first movie which was funny and delightful. The Brits are taking after the yanks far too much nowadays. I don’t have much else to say about the movie here. If you’ve seen the first one, the second one holds no suprises. Except that when Bridget thinks she’s pregnant when she wakes up one day and realizes that it’s been over 8 weeks since her last period. Then, she takes the pregnancy test and it comes up negative. And then they drop it and move on not explaining in the least bit how curious it might have been for a woman to go over two months without a period. This movie has a lot of details that are not very cleverly left out and….well…I’ll just stop there. That pretty much sums it up.

I didn’t think that Bridget Jones looked fat at all in the movie. I was hoping to see Rene Zellweger pack on the pounds for this one. Tom Hanks gained and then lost many more pounds in Castaway. I really like Zellweger’s acting in most movies but to see her sign on for this sequel reminds me quickly that most of these actors are in it for the money most of the time.

Hugh Grant is and always has been a yawn to me. I sometimes wonder if he is capable of playing a different role, or if it’s really just laziness holding him back. Most actors that have made mistakes like the one that Hugh made are not lucky enough to ever get into a decent film again. Hugh Grant has the ability and knowledge to try another role but he chooses not to for some reason. Again, I think they pay actors too much.

Colin Firth seems to me like a Hugh Grant in training or something. As for the rest of the actors I can only thank the lord and jesus almighty that John Cleese didn’t have a cameo in this one. It’s not like he hasn’t sold out enough lately. Anyway, that’s my two cents on this regurgitation of a decent british comedy.
