Time for reading and writing
Some of my most relaxing, stress releasing, and re-stabilizing times are spent doing these two things. I’m not much of a book reader, but I do enjoy reading articles of online. Reading for me can quickly become tiresome if the subject is not interesting to me at that particular moment. In the past when conversations arose of the current books/radio/television shows of the oment at work or in other social situations I would just sort of sit there and listen. Not that I felt left out so much, but it was more like I really had nothing to contribute. Maybe I just enjoy listening? Anyway, in reading this blog I’ve kept for the last few years most of you know that writing is one of my favorite things. I love the ability. I love the release. I love the ownership. I love writing.
Today is special because I woke up this morning to the sun shining through my bedroom window. In Oregon that’s a pretty big deal. No rain mixed with the sun this morning has left me feeling charged to do some writing and build on this spectacular day.
I decided to take a few minutes this morning to well, read my email, but also to try to think of some reasons that I haven’t been writing lately. I went to a couple of online magazines that I normally read articles from and I quickly realized that I haven’t been reading much lately. And while it may seem obvious to everyone else I couldn’t figure out the direct correlation until now. I’ve read and heard several people say that good writing comes with good experience. It’s kind of hard for me to get into writing until I start reading.
Another strange discovery I’ve made about the correlation of reading and writing, at least for me, is that the subjects I read about often have absolutely nothing to do with the subjects I write about. It’s not like when I read I’m thinking “Yeah, that’s interesting and now I’ll write about why”, it’s more like it just opens the flood gate that allows me to write. And once I start writing, sometimes it’s difficult to stop.
Let’s not forget the most important aspect of reading, writing, or any enjoyment one may partake in at any given free moment, and that’s time. Making the time to do things for and with yourself are what makes life great. We all do a lot of work for someone or something else throughout most of our lives, but it’s important to schedule a little time for yourself and do those things that you love to do.
