Soy Hazelnut Latte - Newest way to get fat
It’s been a while. I know. I’ve got more meaningful posts coming, I promise. But until then it’s hot here and I’m at the local My Coffee cafe.
I’ve learned in my travels that there are many things in this country that can make you fat. Until my move to Roseburg there seemed to be a concentration of these fattenings in Texas. We here in the northwest however know how to fatten ourselves up with the rest of the United States. Coffee drinks are probably near the top of this NFL (Northwest Fat List) along with our microbrews and clam chowder.
Until recently I thought I was relatively safe from getting on this wagon as I’m lactose intolerant. I used to joke around with people saying I like my coffee like I like my women: Strong and black. The taste of coffee for me was aquired at a young age since I wasn’t able to soften the blow with creamer or milk. A few weeks ago however I discovered, in all of it’s greatness, the soy hazelnut latte! Actually, a soy latte isn’t be the end of the world. Soy milk has some calories and fat but is a godsend with nutritionally compared with milk. However, when you add more than a full shot of sugary syrup that in this case is chemically flavored with hazelnut you create a monster!
I cannot stop alone. I need help. There, I said it. Someone out there please help me give up this sweet nectar of the gods syrup of satan.
I’ve also been reading the June copy of the Nutrition Action Healthletter in which there’s an article about humans and the history of our liquid caloric intake.
Paleolithic humans lived on breast milk and water. One to two thousand years ago, we started to consume beer and, much later, other alcoholic beverages. A few hundred years ago, when coffee and tea were introduced, people put a little sugar in them.
We, as humans, never really got many calories from liquid nourishment until this last century. Soft drinks were the biggest evolutionary change to our systems when they were introduced after World War II. That was the golden age of high caloric beverages! With coffee drinks we are really breaking into a new age of sugary nectars.
So, if anyone out there has any advice, please throw it this way and help me get off of this joy juice that I’ve recently become addicted to!
